NiMet Warns of Flash Floods in 13 Nigerian States

By George Omagbemi

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash-flood warning for 13 states, urging residents and relevant authorities to take precautionary measures between August 12 and 20, 2026.

The states identified as being at high risk are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet said its assessment was based on factors including expected rainfall intensity, existing soil moisture, drainage capacity, terrain and dam characteristics. The agency warned that flash floods could particularly affect low-lying, flood-prone, urban and riverside communities.

The agency said flooding could result in road closures, traffic disruption, damage to roads and bridges, interruptions to electricity and telecommunications, and waterlogging of farmlands. It also warned that stagnant floodwater could increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

NiMet advised residents to monitor weather and flood alerts, avoid walking or driving through flooded roads and fast-flowing water, and be prepared to relocate to safer areas if necessary.
