The Kano State High Court No. 2 has sentenced Auwalu Adamu, a resident of Yantaji Village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.
The court, presided over by Justice Yusuf Ubale, also sentenced Adamu to life imprisonment for armed robbery.
The judgment was delivered on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in a case filed by the Kano State Government under Sections 221(b) and 298(c) of the Penal Code, Cap. 105, Laws of Kano State 1991, as amended.
The case stemmed from an incident that occurred on July 31, 2021, at Kwarin Makera in Gamoji Village, Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
Adamu was accused of attacking and repeatedly stabbing Saleh Audu Barau in the face with a knife at about 8pm.
During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses before closing its case, while Adamu testified in his own defence without calling any additional witnesses.
After considering the evidence and submissions from both sides, the court found Adamu guilty and imposed the sentences.
Reacting to the judgment, the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the Chief State Counsel, Barrister Hannatu Abdulmalik, for her commitment and professionalism in prosecuting the case.
Maude said the judgment reflected the ministry’s commitment to ensuring justice, particularly in cases involving the protection of lives, property and the interests of Kano residents.
He also reaffirmed the ministry’s readiness to work with the judiciary, security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that criminal cases are diligently prosecuted in accordance with the law.
