Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of being disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
Lawal made the remarks during an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, where he spoke on opposition politics and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The former SGF, who recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress, alleged that the party’s presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Atiku, prompting his decision to leave the party.
He argued that aspiring leaders should demonstrate empathy and show concern for citizens affected by insecurity, economic hardship and violent attacks across the country.
Questioning Atiku’s public engagement on national crises, Lawal said the former vice president had not shown sufficient concern for communities affected by insurgency and other security challenges.
The former SGF also took a swipe at coalition politics, claiming that many political alliances were driven by personal ambitions rather than genuine efforts to address Nigeria’s challenges.
According to him, he joined the ADC to help build a strong coalition capable of offering Nigerians an alternative platform, but internal disputes and leadership struggles weakened the project.
Lawal further urged Nigerians to carefully assess the competence, character and political associations of those seeking elective offices, insisting that accountability, inclusiveness and merit should guide leadership selection ahead of future elections.
