Israeli forces have reportedly carried out an airstrike on a building in Qom believed to be hosting members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the powerful clerical body constitutionally responsible for appointing the country’s Supreme Leader.
According to reports circulating on X and cited by international media outlets, the strike targeted the venue while senior clerics were allegedly gathering or counting votes to appoint a successor following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
Reporters stated that Israeli forces struck what he described as a meeting of Iran’s Supreme Council as members were selecting a new leader.
However, there has been no full independent confirmation regarding who was inside the building at the time of the strike.
The Assembly of Experts is an 88-member clerical institution mandated under Iran’s constitution to appoint, supervise, and if necessary, dismiss the Supreme Leader.
Any direct strike on a gathering of the body would represent a significant escalation in the deepening confrontation between Israel and Iran.
Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst wrote that Israeli forces attack comes amid heightened tensions following joint US and Israeli air operations launched over the weekend.
Washington has long accused Tehran of pursuing nuclear weapons capability an allegation Iranian authorities have consistently denied.
In response to recent strikes, Iran has reportedly fired missiles toward US military installations in Gulf countries, intensifying fears of a broader regional conflict that could engulf multiple states in the Middle East.
As of press time, neither Iranian nor Israeli officials have released detailed casualty figures related to the alleged strike in Qom. The situation remains fluid, with global leaders and security analysts closely monitoring further developments.
