The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the closure of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) online pre-registration portal on Monday, July 27, 2026, urging Nigerians who successfully completed their online applications to visit designated registration centres for biometric capture and completion of the process.
The Commission explained that the temporary closure is part of preparations for the next phase of voter registration and the compilation of an updated national voter register ahead of future elections. INEC stressed that online pre-registration alone does not qualify an applicant as a registered voter until biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs, have been captured at an official registration centre.
According to the electoral body, Nigerians who have not completed their biometric enrolment before the deadline will be required to wait until the next registration window is announced.
The Commission also reminded applicants to present themselves in person, as proxy registration is not permitted under the Electoral Act.
INEC further advised citizens to disregard misinformation regarding the registration process and rely only on updates published through its official communication channels.
The Commission reiterated that the CVR exercise is designed to accommodate first-time voters, those seeking transfers of registration, replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and corrections of personal information.
The electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, transparent and inclusive elections while encouraging eligible Nigerians to take advantage of future voter registration opportunities to participate actively in the country’s democratic process.
