By Paul Joseph

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, the annual celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Friday through a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and around the world as they prepare to observe the religious occasion.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility, peaceful coexistence and service to humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.

He noted that these values remained relevant as Nigeria continued to navigate social and economic challenges, urging citizens to pray for peace, unity and stronger relationships across religious, ethnic and social divides.

The minister also called on Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and respect one another during the holiday, stressing that building and sustaining national unity requires the collective efforts of all citizens.

He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property while supporting initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability across the country.

The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a public holiday by workers and institutions covered by federal public holiday arrangements.

Eid ul Mawlid is observed by many Muslims to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is commonly marked through prayers, religious lectures, gatherings and reflections on his life and teachings.

The Federal Government urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote peaceful coexistence, strengthen national unity and demonstrate compassion towards one another.
