Election officials at Maigari Sheshe Primary School, located in Sheshe Ward of Kano’s Birnin Kano Local Government Area, were on Saturday seen struggling to stay alert amid a noticeably low voter turnout.Correspondents who monitored activities at the polling centre observed that several ad hoc staff and security personnel appeared visibly fatigued, with some officials seen yawning and others resting their heads on desks during long stretches without voters. The usually busy school premises wore a calm and subdued look, as only a handful of voters trickled in intermittently to cast their ballots. Accreditation and voting processes were conducted without hitches, but the pace remained slow for most of the morning and early afternoon. One of the presiding officers at the polling unit, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the turnout as “far below expectations.”“We were fully prepared before the official commencement time. All materials arrived early, and the accreditation process has been smooth, but the voters are just not coming,” the official said.Security personnel stationed at the polling centre confirmed that the situation was peaceful, with no reports of disturbances or electoral malpractice. They attributed the calm atmosphere partly to the low turnout.A resident of Sheshe Ward, who identified himself as Musa Ibrahim, expressed concern over the apathy among eligible voters.“People have their reasons. Some say they are disappointed with previous elections, while others believe the outcome will not change anything,” he said.Another voter, Amina Sani, who arrived at the polling unit shortly before noon, said she decided to exercise her civic right despite the general indifference.“It is our responsibility to vote. Even if others choose to stay at home, I believe every vote counts,” she said.Observers noted that the slow pace allowed election officials to complete accreditation and voting within minutes for each voter, eliminating the queues typically associated with elections in densely populated areas. As of mid-afternoon, electoral officers remained hopeful that turnout might improve before the close of polls. However, the sparse presence of voters raised concerns about civic engagement in the ward.Efforts to obtain official figures on voter turnout from local electoral authorities were unsuccessful as of press time. The election process at Maigari Sheshe Primary School nonetheless remained orderly and peaceful, with officials maintaining readiness should more voters arrive before the end of voting.
