Women and other residents of Bindin community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State have protested the reported withdrawal of troops from the area, with some women reportedly blocking a military vehicle from leaving the community.
The protest followed reports that soldiers deployed to the community were being withdrawn, raising concerns among residents over the security implications of the move.
Videos circulating online showed a group of women gathered around an armoured military vehicle, preventing it from proceeding. The protesters were reportedly demanding that the troops remain in the community because of fears of attacks by armed groups operating in parts of Zamfara.
Residents said the presence of security personnel had provided a sense of protection to the community and expressed concern that their withdrawal could expose residents to attacks, particularly kidnapping and banditry.
Bindin is located in Maru Local Government Area, one of the parts of Zamfara that have experienced persistent security challenges.
The reported protest highlights the concerns that can arise when security deployments are altered in communities affected by armed attacks.
However, details surrounding the reported troop withdrawal, including whether the deployment is permanent or part of a wider military rotation, were not immediately clear.
The incident comes amid continuing military operations against bandits and other armed groups across Zamfara and neighbouring states.
For residents of Bindin, the immediate concern remains security and whether adequate protection will remain in place if the troops are eventually withdrawn.
