Zamfara State’s Governor Dauda Lawal has outlined his reasons for leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move was made in the overriding interest of his state’s stability, progress and sustainable development. Lawal’s explanation came after his decision was publicly announced on March 9, 2026 at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Gusau.
In a statement read on his behalf by his media aide, Lawal said he undertook extensive consultations with political leaders, elders, supporters and stakeholders across the state before taking the bold step to defect. He cited prolonged internal crises, leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at both the national and state levels as key factors that had “created uncertainty and distractions” that could hinder effective governance in Zamfara.
Lawal also explained that aligning with the APC would strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government, enabling his administration to better address insecurity, accelerate development, and deliver democratic dividends to the people of Zamfara. He described the move as necessary to foster unity, enhance security and promote economic growth in the North‑West state.
The governor thanked members of the PDP for their support over the years while stressing that prevailing political realities made the defection essential for good governance. Lawal’s decision also increases the number of APC governors nationwide to 31, further consolidating the party’s influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
