Balendra “Balen” Shah, a 35‑year‑old former rapper and Kathmandu mayor turned politician, is on course to become Nepal’s next prime minister after delivering a stunning defeat to four‑time former prime minister K. P. Sharma Oli in the Jhapa‑5 constituency of the 2026 Nepal general election. The election, held early March, 2026, was the first since massive youth‑led protests in 2025 toppled the previous government and created a groundswell for new leadership.
Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has secured a commanding lead in parliamentary results, with the party winning a majority of directly elected seats and heading towards a landslide victory, demonstrating widespread public frustration with traditional parties and a growing demand for reform. In the high‑stakes contest, Shah received 68,348 votes, far eclipsing Oli’s 18,734 in the former prime minister’s own stronghold; a symbolic and dramatic shift in Nepalese politics.
A civil engineer by training and a rapper known for critiquing corruption and inequality in his music, Shah resigned as mayor in January 2026 to contest the national election. His campaign tapped into Gen‑Z energy and anti‑establishment sentiment following last year’s upheaval, positioning him as a youthful reformist alternative to Nepal’s political establishment.
Political analysts say Shah’s rise signals a generational change in leadership and reflects deep public desire for accountability, economic opportunity and transparent governance. If confirmed by parliament, he will be one of Nepal’s youngest prime ministers ever and the first from outside the country’s longstanding political elite.
