Balogun Sultan, a National Diploma II student of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), was reportedly shot dead by a Nigerian soldier during a security operation in Lagos State, triggering outrage and grief among students and residents.
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, near the WAEC bus stop in Yaba, Lagos, a busy transport hub close to the campus. Sultan had reportedly come to the institution to write his examinations under the school’s distance learning programme and was heading home to Lagos Island after completing his papers when the shooting happened.
Witness accounts indicate that soldiers had been deployed to the area following intelligence reports about a possible cult clash around the Yaba axis. In the course of the security operation, gunfire reportedly erupted, and Sultan (who was leaving the area at the time) was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by one of the soldiers.
Bystanders rushed the wounded student to the Military Hospital in Yaba, where doctors attempted emergency treatment, including chest surgery, but he later died from his injuries.
The tragedy has sparked anger and fear within the academic community, while military authorities had yet to release an official statement at the time of reporting.
