Gunmen have attacked two farmers along Agunla Farm Road in Ayede-Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, killing one of them.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the case was reported at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday by a concerned resident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, identified as Ben Daniels, and another man, James Unekwu, were riding on a motorcycle to their farm camp when they were allegedly ambushed by unknown gunmen.
Jimoh said Unekwu managed to escape from the attackers, while Daniels was killed and his body dumped by the roadside.
Police operatives were said to have mobilised immediately to the scene, where the corpse was evacuated and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Unekwu is currently in police protective custody as tensions rise over a possible conspiracy, while investigations continue,” the spokesperson added.
The police urged residents to remain calm and avoid blocking highways or engaging in actions that could disrupt public peace, assuring that due process would be followed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, youths in Ayede-Ogbese community reportedly barricaded the Akure-Owo highway on Tuesday morning in protest against recurring killings in the area, causing traffic disruption.
The state Commissioner of Police reassured residents of the command’s commitment to tackling crime and safeguarding lives and property across Ondo State.
