The reconciliation between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara appears to be gathering momentum following a fresh meeting between the two political leaders in Port Harcourt.
Wike hosted Fubara at his Port Harcourt residence on Sunday in what political observers described as another significant step towards consolidating peace after months of political tension in Rivers State.
The meeting was the first publicly known engagement between the two leaders since Fubara announced that he would not seek another term as governor in the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.
Also present at the meeting were the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, and Chairman of the Rainbow Coalition Reconciliation Committee, Magnus Abe.
Fubara attended alongside former APC Deputy National Chairman, Sam Jaja.
The latest development comes amid renewed efforts by political stakeholders to strengthen the peace process between Wike and Fubara, whose relationship deteriorated shortly after the governor assumed office in 2023.
The political crisis triggered months of instability in the state, including impeachment threats by lawmakers believed to be loyal to Wike.
The crisis eventually led to President Bola Tinubu declaring a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State.
However, following a peace agreement between the political camps, efforts have intensified to reunite the governor and his supporters with the political structure that supported his emergence as governor.
Wike had recently declared that his differences with Fubara had been resolved, adding that the governor had agreed to reunite with the political family that backed him during the 2023 election.
As part of the emerging political realignment, Fubara joined the APC and aligned with the Wike-backed Rainbow Coalition.
A reconciliation committee chaired by former senator Magnus Abe was subsequently established to engage the governor and his supporters and facilitate their reintegration into the political structure.
Fubara has also expressed support for the Rainbow Coalition and endorsed the APC governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 Rivers governorship election.
The renewed engagement between Wike and Fubara is expected to further shape the political landscape in Rivers State as preparations gradually gather pace for the 2027 general elections.
