The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation framework for state police in Nigeria.
The committee was formally set up on Wednesday and will be chaired by Olu Ogunsakin, a professor of police studies.
The development marks a significant step in the federal government’s move toward decentralising policing in response to rising insecurity across the country.
President Bola Tinubu has on several occasions pledged that his administration would establish state police as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening internal security and improving response at subnational levels.
Details of the committee’s terms of reference and timeline for submission of recommendations were not immediately disclosed as of press time.
The inauguration signals what observers describe as a transition from political promise to institutional groundwork on the long-debated issue of state policing.
