The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled the official portrait of its new Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, following the confirmation of his appointment as the substantive head of the force.
The portrait was released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, marking a symbolic step in Disu’s transition from acting to confirmed IGP.
Disu’s appointment was ratified on Monday by the Nigeria Police Council during a meeting chaired by Bola Tinubu. The council’s decision formally positions him as the country’s top police officer, with his swearing-in scheduled to take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the presidency confirmed that the ceremony would coincide with the weekly council session, underscoring the administration’s commitment to a seamless leadership transition within the police hierarchy.
The council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, brought together key government figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu. Their presence reflects the constitutional process required in confirming the nation’s police chief.
Also in attendance were Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
Following the meeting, several governors expressed confidence in Disu’s leadership. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised his track record, particularly his tenure as head of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned recognition for tackling crime and improving response efficiency.
Similarly, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule described the appointment as well-deserved, citing Disu’s professionalism and years of service. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also endorsed the decision, while Wike commended Disu’s strategic approach to security challenges.
Disu was initially appointed acting IGP by President Tinubu on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.
At a brief ceremony held at the Louis Edet House in Abuja, the new IGP assured Nigerians of his commitment to professional, accountable, and modern policing. He pledged to strengthen security operations nationwide and build public trust in the force.
With his confirmation now secured, expectations are high that Disu will bring his experience and reform-driven approach to bear in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
