Approximately 140 people are missing after an Iranian navy vessel sank off the coast of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan navy confirmed on Wednesday. Of the roughly 180 people aboard, 32 have been rescued.
A spokesperson for the Sri Lankan navy told reporters that the cause of the sinking is not yet known, and rescue operations are ongoing. Authorities are coordinating search and rescue efforts in the area, but conditions at sea are reportedly challenging.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, where ongoing US and Israeli airstrikes have targeted Iranian military and security sites.
Israeli officials recently reported strikes on “security headquarters” in Tehran, while Iran has conducted retaliatory attacks in the region, including on Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Turkey has said NATO defenses intercepted an Iranian missile earlier this week.
Meanwhile, Iran’s planned three-day funeral ceremony for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, set to begin this evening, has been postponed amid the ongoing crisis.
Residents in Tehran described the situation as worsening daily, highlighting growing fear and uncertainty across the region.
Global observers are monitoring the naval incident closely, as concerns rise over maritime safety and the broader implications of the conflict for international shipping routes.
Rescue teams in Sri Lanka continue operations to locate the missing personnel, while officials urge families and the public to await official updates.
