The Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar III has strongly denied allegations that Muslims are plotting to wipe out Christians in Nigeria, describing such claims as dangerous narratives capable of worsening divisions across the country.
The monarch spoke on Wednesday in during the first triannual meeting of the (NIREC), where religious and political leaders gathered to discuss insecurity and national unity.
According to Sa’adu, Nigeria’s security crisis should not be interpreted through a religious lens, insisting that criminals and terrorists do not represent Islam or Christianity.
“Muslims are not planning to eliminate Christians in Nigeria. Such a thing is impossible,” he said while urging Nigerians to avoid spreading narratives capable of fueling suspicion and hatred.
The Sultan also condemned the practice of attaching religious labels to violent crimes such as terrorism, banditry and killings, stressing that perpetrators should simply be called criminals.
He warned that many individuals hide behind religion to justify evil acts, even though their actions contradict the true teachings of faith.

The traditional ruler further emphasized the importance of dialogue between Christians and Muslims, saying mutual understanding remains critical to preserving peace and unity in Nigeria.
He additionally condemned suicide bombings and attacks carried out in the name of religion, warning that those responsible would face divine judgment for taking innocent lives.
