A coalition of pro-Biafra activists has announced plans to stage a massive protest demanding the release of detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The organizers, identifying themselves as the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, are mobilizing supporters for what they describe as a “One Million March.”
The demonstration is scheduled to take place in Aba, Abia State, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, with participants urged to converge in large numbers to peacefully demand Kanu’s freedom from Nigerian government custody. Flyers circulating on social media called the protest the “mother of all marches,” appealing to supporters across the South-East and beyond to participate.
The agitation stems from the continued detention of Kanu, who was rearrested in 2021 and returned to Nigeria under controversial circumstances. His detention has remained a rallying point for pro-Biafra groups and sympathizers who argue that his continued incarceration fuels tensions in the region.
Security agencies in Nigeria have repeatedly warned against unauthorized gatherings linked to separatist agitation, citing potential threats to public safety. Authorities have yet to clarify whether the planned march will be permitted or restricted.
Political analysts say the proposed protest highlights the persistent political and emotional divide surrounding the Biafra question in Nigeria, a decades-old issue rooted in historical grievances dating back to the Nigerian civil war.
