A criminal court in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, has sentenced former Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT) president Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of embezzling funds provided by FIFA for football development programs. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, following investigations into financial misconduct within the federation.
Prosecutors said Mayolas diverted about $1.1 million in FIFA funding, including money from the global football body’s COVID-19 relief program, which was meant to support national football activities and infrastructure development in Congo. Instead, investigators found that portions of the funds were allegedly misappropriated for personal and unauthorized use.
The court convicted Mayolas on multiple charges, including money laundering, forgery, misuse of public funds, and illegal conflict of interest. Authorities revealed that several football development projects expected to benefit from the funds were never implemented, raising serious concerns about governance within the federation.
Reports indicate that Mayolas was tried in absentia and remains at large, as his whereabouts were unknown at the time of sentencing.
The case has triggered renewed calls for greater financial transparency and accountability in African football administration, especially in the management of international development funds.
