The Nigeria Police Council has formally confirmed Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), cementing his leadership of the nation’s top law-enforcement institution at a critical time for national security. The decision followed a high-level meeting of the council chaired by Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Disu’s confirmation comes after he was appointed in an acting capacity to succeed Kayode Egbetokun, whose tenure ended amid growing calls for institutional reform and stronger responses to banditry, kidnapping and violent crime across several states.
Under Section 215 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Nigeria Police Council (comprising the President, state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General) is mandated to advise on the appointment of the IGP. The council’s endorsement effectively solidifies Disu’s authority to implement strategic reforms.
A career officer with extensive operational experience, Disu now faces mounting pressure to modernise policing, strengthen intelligence coordination, and restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. Analysts say his tenure will be judged by measurable security improvements and institutional accountability nationwide.
