PDP Faction Kicks Against Candidate Withdrawals in FCT Polls

By Charles Maduka

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the withdrawal of some of its chairmanship candidates from the forthcoming Abuja Area Council elections, describing the development as anti-democratic.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s National Working Committee said it received with “utter dismay” reports that some of its candidates had stepped down from the race.

The faction alleged that the withdrawals reflect what it described as unhealthy practices within the party’s leadership, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles.

It further claimed that the development signals a troubling trend ahead of future elections, alleging that there could be attempts to pressure or influence candidates in major contests.

The party stated that it had previously taken disciplinary action against certain individuals over similar conduct in a bid to strengthen internal democracy and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general election.

It also urged voters in the Federal Capital Territory to remain vigilant during the polls and ensure that election results are properly transmitted from polling units.

The reaction follows the withdrawal of the PDP chairmanship candidate for the Bwari Area Council, Julius Adamu, who stepped down in favour of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Joshua Musa.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Bwari during a gathering attended by supporters and political stakeholders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
