Osun Poll: Adeleke Is Not Fubara, Momodu Tells Wike

By Opeyemi Adelakun

Former Peoples Democratic Party presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has cautioned Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, against comparing Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, with his Rivers State counterpart, Siminalayi Fubara.

Momodu, now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, made the remark on Tuesday while reacting to a report quoting Wike as saying he could have helped the All Progressives Congress win the August 15 Osun governorship election.

“Osun people would have demystified you mercilessly. Adeleke is not Fubara!! My kobo advice, stop equating yourself to God,” Momodu wrote on X.

Wike had reportedly said the APC would not have lost the Osun election if President Bola Tinubu had been determined to secure victory at all costs.

“I would have been there, and we would have won it, and there’s nothing the governor can do,” Wike was quoted as saying.

Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, won re-election for a second term after polling 511,067 votes.

The APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, finished second with 444,815 votes.

The victory marked Adeleke’s second consecutive governorship election win, having defeated former Governor Gboyega Oyetola in the 2022 election while contesting under the PDP.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor and prominent member of the PDP’s G5 governors, opposed the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. He has since been appointed FCT minister by President Tinubu while retaining his PDP membership and publicly supporting the President.

Momodu had earlier declared his support for Adeleke ahead of the Osun election despite belonging to the ADC, another opposition party.

On August 11, he urged opposition parties to put aside their individual interests and support Adeleke’s re-election, arguing that such an alliance was necessary to challenge the APC.

Momodu said he joined the ADC because prominent opposition figures had come together to form a broad coalition against the ruling party.

He described the APC as a threat to Nigeria’s economy, social cohesion and democratic institutions and argued that opposition parties should unite behind Adeleke in Osun.
