The controversy surrounding a luxury Hermès handbag reportedly carried by Margaret Obi, wife of 2027 presidential hopeful Peter Obi, has continued to generate debate, with several public figures questioning whether the luxury item is consistent with the former Anambra State governor’s widely known image of personal frugality.
The debate intensified between September 14 and 15, 2026, after photographs and videos of Mrs Obi with the handbag circulated widely on social media. The bag has been reported in various media outlets as having an estimated value of between ₦237 million and ₦250 million, based on an online price reportedly listed for a Hermès model. However, there is no verified evidence that the bag was purchased for that exact amount.
Media personality Daddy Freeze said he had no problem with Peter Obi’s wife carrying an expensive handbag, noting that her husband was wealthy before entering government.
His concern, however, was the contrast between the luxury item and Peter Obi’s public reputation for prudence. Freeze questioned whether people closely associated with a politician who promotes an image of frugality should also be subjected to public scrutiny.
Other commentators have since joined the debate, turning the handbag into a wider discussion about wealth, political branding, personal lifestyle and double standards in Nigerian politics.
Supporters of Peter Obi have argued that his wife’s personal possessions should not automatically be linked to government funds or her husband’s political conduct, particularly given Obi’s longstanding business background.
As the debate continues, the central issue remains less about the handbag itself and more about whether political leaders who campaign heavily on prudence and reduced public spending should expect their personal and family lifestyles to receive greater public scrutiny.
