A Kano elder and northern scholar, Malam Ibrahim Ado Kurawa, has accused former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of inconsistency over the ongoing Kano Emirship dispute involving Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.
The criticism emerged on May 8, 2026, after Kurawa questioned Ganduje’s changing position on the Kano throne controversy.
He argued that Ganduje had previously recognised Sanusi II as Emir of Kano during a public function before later describing the acknowledgment as mere protocol.
Kurawa also cited an alleged incident involving Ganduje’s request for the coronation of his nephew as a village head under Sanusi’s authority, insisting the former governor’s actions contradicted his recent public comments on the emirship tussle.
The Kano Emirate crisis dates back to 2019 when Ganduje’s administration created additional emirates that reduced the powers of the Kano Emirate under Sanusi II.
Sanusi was later removed in 2020 before being reinstated in 2024 by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf following the repeal of the emirate law.
Ganduje had recently maintained that only the Supreme Court could deliver a final decision on the dispute between Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.
