The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna Zonal Directorate, has secured the conviction of Musa Abdulmalik and Sunday Godwin before Justice Amina Bello of the Kaduna State High Court for cheating by impersonation.
The defendants faced separate charges of impersonation and fraud involving online social media platforms.
Musa Abdulmalik, who used the alias Lynn Ben on Telegram, was accused of defrauding a victim identified as BJK of $80 USD by pretending to be a female adult entertainer in January 2026. The offence falls under Sections 308 and 309 of the Penal Code Law, 2017 of Kaduna State.
Sunday Godwin, operating under the username Chrismitchellprivateacc3 on TikTok, was charged with defrauding multiple victims of AUD 400 in 2025, under the same legal provisions.
Both accused pleaded guilty. The prosecution, led by M.E. Eimonye, requested their conviction and sentencing.
Justice Bello sentenced Abdulmalik to five years imprisonment or an option to pay a N300,000 fine. He was also ordered to forfeit a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the $80 proceeds from his crime to the federal government.
Godwin was sentenced to four years imprisonment or an alternative N300,000 fine, and was required to forfeit an iPhone 13 and AUD 400 obtained through the offence.
The court’s ruling highlights the judicial system’s commitment to tackling online fraud and impersonation, reinforcing that digital platforms cannot be used to exploit unsuspecting victims.
