A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has formally announced dates for its 2027 presidential and other primaries, even as the party remains embroiled in a leadership dispute. The National Executive Committee (NEC) met Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Abuja and approved a comprehensive timetable ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Under the resolution, the PDP is scheduled to begin its nomination process on April 10, 2026, with state assembly primaries set for May 2, National Assembly primaries on May 9, and governorship primaries on May 16. The primary highlight (the presidential primary) is slated for May 23, 2026.
The timetable was released amid persistent internal divisions within the party, following conflicting court rulings over the legality of its leadership structures and congresses. Wike’s camp has sought to assert control of the PDP’s machinery, even as reconciliation talks with other factions continue.
Party leaders said the schedule was structured to comply with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) revised timetable and the Electoral Act, 2026, ensuring that the PDP’s primary process aligns with statutory requirements ahead of the 2027 polls.
Despite ongoing legal and organisational challenges, the announcement marks a significant step forward in preparing the PDP’s slate of candidates for the presidential, governorship and national assembly contests next year.
