The United States President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that the ongoing conflict could end soon, as Tehran confirmed it is reviewing a proposal aimed at ending the war.
Trump made the remarks on Wednesday during a virtual campaign event in Georgia, where he said most people supported his administration’s efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The development follows reports by Axios that the White House is close to securing a 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran that could lay the foundation for broader nuclear negotiations.
According to the report, the proposed agreement includes conditions such as suspending Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme, lifting sanctions on Tehran and reopening free passage through the .
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, , confirmed that the proposal was still under review and that Iran would communicate its response through Pakistani mediators involved in the talks.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister also disclosed that Islamabad was working to help transform the current ceasefire into a permanent end to the conflict.
However, the proposal has faced criticism from some Iranian officials. described the reported memorandum as a “wish list” and warned that Iran was prepared to respond strongly if negotiations failed.
Trump also warned that military operations could resume at a higher intensity if Iran refused to agree to a deal, while insisting that recent discussions between both countries had been productive.
The tensions between Iran, the United States and escalated earlier this year after joint military operations targeted Iranian positions, triggering retaliatory attacks across the Gulf region.
Although a ceasefire was announced in April, tensions have remained high around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister said there was “full coordination” between Israel and the United States regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security operations.
