Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the completion of the long-awaited Aboto–Atijere Road project before December 2026, describing the road as critical to the economic growth, security, and social development of the oil-producing communities in the state.
The Governor gave this assurance through the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, during an inspection visit to the ongoing project.
Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that despite the setbacks and delays that have affected the project over the years, his administration remains determined to ensure its successful completion for the benefit of residents in the mandate areas.
According to him, the Aboto–Atijere Road project is of strategic importance to the state government because of its direct impact on transportation, commerce, and peaceful coexistence among communities within the riverine areas.
Speaking during the inspection, the OSOPADEC Chairman, Prince Poroye, conveyed the Governor’s commitment to the project, stating that the administration had intensified support and intervention to accelerate construction work.
“We thank God for strength. We thank God for passion. We thank God for energy. We had this strong determination that, not minding all circumstances, Aboto–Atijere Road will be delivered before December this year,” Poroye said.
The Governor explained that the project, which was awarded in 2019 with an expected completion period of 24 months, suffered delays due to administrative and funding challenges. He, however, assured residents that his administration had revived the project through consistent funding support and close monitoring.
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised that with a committed contractor and focused OSOPADEC leadership, the road project must be completed to allow government attention to shift to other developmental projects across the oil-producing communities.
He also intervened in resolving issues affecting the pace of work on the project and directed that efforts should be intensified to ensure that the road is connected from Aboto to Atijere ahead of the asphalt phase.
The Governor further noted that the renewed attention being given to the road project was partly aimed at addressing recurring tensions between the Makun and Atijere communities, stressing that improved accessibility would enhance movement, foster peace, and strengthen socio-economic activities in the area.
According to the OSOPADEC Chairman, only about seven kilometres remain between Akata Junction and Atijere, and he expressed confidence that the contractor would meet the December completion target.
Speaking during the inspection, the Managing Director of LEE FAKINO Nigeria Limited, Chief Akindele Fajemiyo, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for providing assurances of adequate funding to facilitate the speedy completion of the road.
“The job was actually awarded in 2019, but because of the paucity of funds, we had not been able to do much. However, with the coming of Mr. Governor, the assurance is there that funds will not be a problem, and we must finish this job this year,” he said.
Fajemiyo assured residents that the road would be fully tarred from Aboto to Atijere before the end of the year, while also appreciating the support of OSOPADEC, community leaders, and youths in ensuring the smooth execution of the project.
Also speaking, the Oloja of Akata, Chief Oke Olejagbo, praised Governor Aiyedatiwa and the OSOPADEC leadership for their commitment to the project, expressing optimism that the road would bring lasting relief and development to the affected communities.
