Armed bandits have reportedly demanded ₦1 billion and 35 motorcycles as ransom for the release of 37 Christian worshippers abducted from churches in Kaduna State.
The victims were kidnapped during coordinated attacks carried out on Easter Sunday in the Ariko community of Kachia Local Government Area.
According to community sources, the attackers invaded St. Augustine Catholic Church, ECWA Church and a Baptist church during worship sessions, abducting dozens of worshippers after killing at least five residents in the assault.
The abductors were said to have specifically requested 20 “Boko Haram” brand motorcycles and 15 Bajaj motorcycles in addition to the huge cash payment before the captives can regain their freedom.
Residents disclosed that the victims, made up of women, children and elderly persons, have remained in captivity for about 45 days under harsh conditions.
President of the Kuturmi Development Association (KUDA), Dr. Joseph David Ariko, lamented the situation and described the demand as impossible for the rural community to meet.
He said the affected families and residents lack the financial capacity to raise such an enormous amount, stressing that the prolonged captivity of the worshippers has thrown the community into fear and uncertainty.
Ariko appealed to the Federal Government and the Kaduna State Government to urgently intervene and intensify security operations aimed at rescuing the remaining hostages.
The latest incident has further highlighted growing concerns over insecurity and recurring abductions in parts of Kaduna State, where armed groups have continued to target rural communities, schools and places of worship.
