Former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has stated that Nigerian politicians will continue looting public funds unless citizens actively resist corruption and demand accountability from political leaders.
Amaechi made the remark during an interview on Arise Television while reacting to the worsening state of governance and economic hardship in the country.
He recalled a statement he made years ago during a public event organised by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, where he warned Nigerians that politicians would not stop stealing unless citizens confronted them.
According to the former governor, corruption and poor governance have continued to impoverish Nigerians while many political office holders enrich themselves with public resources.
He argued that the failure of citizens to hold leaders accountable has encouraged impunity within the political system.
Amaechi, now associated with the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 political season, also expressed concern over what he described as the gradual collapse of governance standards in Nigeria.
He acknowledged that some governors performed well but maintained that the political class has largely failed ordinary citizens.
Political analysts believe the statement reflects growing frustration among opposition figures over corruption, public dissatisfaction, and Nigeria’s worsening economic challenges ahead of future elections.
