A senior member of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, Dr. Akin Fapohunda, has alleged that Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, is acting under the political influence of former Edo governor and senator Adams Oshiomhole, while also cautioning opposition figure Peter Obi to be mindful of his safety amid rising political tension.
Fapohunda made the remarks during an interview aired on Symfoni TV on Monday, March 10, 2026, where he criticised the political dynamics within Edo State and suggested that Okpebholo’s leadership style reflects the lingering influence of powerful political godfathers in Nigerian politics.
According to the Afenifere chieftain, Okpebholo emerged politically through the backing of Oshiomhole, a dominant figure in Edo politics and a key member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He argued that the situation mirrors the era of strong political godfatherism that once shaped politics in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Oyo State.
Fapohunda also urged Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and prominent opposition politician, to remain vigilant while engaging in political activities across the country, warning that Nigeria’s political climate is increasingly volatile.
The statement has reignited debate about political influence, godfatherism, and the safety of opposition figures as Nigeria’s political landscape gradually shifts toward the 2027 general elections.
