Lecturers at University of Lagos (UNILAG) under the platform of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have commenced an indefinite strike over what they described as “amputated” salaries paid by the university management for January and February 2026.
The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after an emergency congress of the union held on Tuesday and signed by the branch chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and the secretary, Adesina Arikawe.
According to the union, the industrial action will take effect from Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and will continue until the university authorities fully pay the outstanding salaries.
ASUU said the decision followed extensive deliberations on the salary cuts implemented by the university management over the past two months.
The union alleged that the institution paid incomplete salaries to its members in January, noting that staff at the Akoka campus did not receive Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), while those at the Idi-Araba campus were denied both EAA and CATA payments.
It further claimed that the February 2026 salaries were also “unilaterally and wickedly” slashed by the university management.
The lecturers described the action as a violation of acceptable standards and accused the university administration of acting unfairly toward its members.
ASUU therefore directed all its members to withdraw their services until the management pays the full January and February salaries owed to them.
The development may disrupt academic activities at the Lagos-based institution if the dispute between the lecturers and the university management is not resolved quickly.
