The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has raised alarm after hackers reportedly took control of her personal email account, sparking concerns over cybersecurity and potential misinformation. The incident highlights the growing vulnerability of public officials to digital breaches in an increasingly connected world.
This development was reported on April 10, 2026, when Dabiri-Erewa publicly disclosed that her email had been compromised by unknown cyber actors. She urged the public to disregard any messages originating from the affected account, warning that she currently has no control over communications sent through it.
According to her statement, the breach has disrupted both official and personal correspondence, with thousands of emails potentially affected. She appealed for patience while efforts are underway to recover the account and restore secure communication channels.
Beyond the immediate incident, the development underscores a broader issue: cybersecurity threats are no longer limited to private individuals but now increasingly target high-profile public figures. Such breaches carry risks of misinformation, fraud, and reputational damage if not swiftly contained.
As authorities work to resolve the situation, the incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger digital security measures across Nigeria’s public institutions.
