On Thursday, social media was abuzz with reports that prominent activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) had visited the residence graveyard of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti in Lagos to pay his respects.
Images circulating today show VDM alongside Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, performing a ram sacrifice at the grave.
According to social media reports, their visit was meant to honor Fela’s enduring legacy, which continues to resonate over the years.
VDM has been an outspoken advocate for preserving Fela’s legacy, frequently defending it in online discussions and cautioning others against showing disrespect to the late artist.
Recalled in January 2026, a highly publicized and intense feud broke out between Nigerian singer Wizkid and Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, regarding Fela’s legacy.
The conflict started when Seun criticized fans for comparing Wizkid to Fela, deeming such comparisons disrespectful to his father’s legacy. In response, Wizkid insulted Seun on Instagram, claiming he was “bigger than Fela.”
Seun Kuti contended that drawing comparisons between contemporary artists and Fela diminishes the cultural, political, and musical significance of the late icon. He condemned these comparisons as “disrespectful.”
Wizkid’s reaction included a series of Instagram stories where he called Seun “foolish,” ridiculed him, and asserted his superiority over the legendary Fela.
The “Battle” consisted of a heated exchange on social media, with Seun referencing his father’s legacy while Wizkid targeted Seun’s personal life and career.
Recently, Fela Kuti was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy at the Grammys Special Merit Awards, becoming the first African to receive this honor.
He was recognized alongside other legends such as Chaka Khan, Cher, Carlos Santana, and Whitney Houston.
Fela Kuti is interred in the grounds of his former home, the Kalakuta Republic in Lagos.
Previously, a separate incident that garnered significant attention on social media was of dancer Korra Obidi also visiting Fela’s grave, which was noted in late 2025.
