The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, reaffirming that nearly everyone born on American soil is entitled to US citizenship under the Constitution.
In a 6-3 ruling delivered on the final day of its current term, the court upheld the long-standing constitutional interpretation that grants automatic citizenship to people born in the United States, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.
The judgment marks a major legal setback for the Trump administration, which had sought to limit the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship through executive action and subsequent legal challenges.
With the ruling, children born in the United States will continue to automatically acquire American citizenship, preserving a constitutional principle that has remained in place for more than a century.
