US Military Eliminates Iranian Official Tied to Alleged Trump Assassination Plot

United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that U.S. forces killed an Iranian official linked to an alleged plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump, a development disclosed during a Pentagon briefing in Washington, D.C., on March 4, 2026.

Hegseth told reporters that the leader of an Iranian unit accused of orchestrating the 2024 plot had been “hunted down and killed” by U.S. forces, yielding what he described as Trump having “the last laugh” over perceived threats to his life.

The assassination plot (which U.S. prosecutors in 2024 tied to an individual allegedly acting under direction from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard) was never publicly confirmed by Tehran, which has consistently denied targeting Trump and other U.S. officials.

Hegseth stressed that eliminating the target was not the original focus of the broader U.S.–Israel military campaign against Tehran, which has expanded into full‑scale conflict. However, he said U.S. strategic lists were adjusted to include individuals believed to pose a threat to American leaders.

The announcement comes as part of an intensifying military confrontation that has seen strikes deep into Iranian territory and heightened geopolitical tensions. The U.S. continues to assert military objectives while facing international scrutiny over escalation and regional stability.
