Security operatives have arrested two suspected arms traffickers in Mararaban Tula, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, in what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal arms proliferation in the North-East.
The suspects were caught in a grey Toyota Corolla with Taraba registration number JAL 475 YQ.
Security sources said that the suspects had been found in a consignment of gun powder, two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), an RPG launcher and a huge amount of ammunition.
The initial investigations show that the suspects are reportedly engaged in the trade of weapons in Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Adamawa States by providing weapons to the terrorist groups that are acting in the area.
Sources also revealed that the weapons that were recovered were to be delivered to a person known as “Ardo” who was reported to be living in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Nevertheless, the government is yet to provide additional information about the supposed recipient.
The security agencies affirmed that they are still investigating to identify more of the accomplices and destroy the broader network behind the operation. Authorities restated their desire to crack down on the unlawful supply of weapons and reinforcement of security in the region.
The arrest is perceived to be among the larger-scale attempts of law enforcement agencies to fight terrorism and reestablish peace and stability in the impacted societies
