A 200-level medical student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Ifeoluwa Wisdom Akinmade, has reportedly died after consuming a harmful substance.
The incident was announced on Monday in a statement jointly signed by the leadership of the University of Ibadan Medical Students Association (UIMSA).
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother and colleague, Ifeoluwa Wisdom Akinmade, a member of the 200-level constituency,” the statement read, urging members of the university community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
According to reports circulating on social media, the student was said to have taken a substance believed to be a pesticide on Saturday night. He was initially rushed to a hospital within the university before being transferred to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he later died after efforts to save his life proved unsuccessful.
Funmi Adetuyibi, spokesperson of UCH, confirmed the death, stating that the student was brought to the facility following reports that he had consumed a harmful substance.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the University of Ibadan had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Attempts to reach university officials for comments were unsuccessful.
Unverified claims on social media suggested that the incident may have been linked to academic concerns. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The tragic development has sparked conversations about mental health awareness and the need for stronger emotional and psychological support systems within tertiary institutions.
