Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 47 people, mostly women and children, from captivity during a major offensive against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Borno State.
The victims were freed during military operations conducted on June 20 in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area, following sustained ground and air assaults on terrorist strongholds around the Lake Chad region.
In a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the military said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to weaken terrorist networks and reclaim occupied areas.
According to the statement, sustained pressure mounted by troops forced the insurgents to flee their positions in confusion, creating an opportunity for the captives to escape after enduring prolonged detention.
The military disclosed that the rescued civilians have since been moved to a secure location, where they are receiving medical care and other humanitarian assistance.
Authorities added that relevant government agencies and humanitarian partners are working together to provide the victims with the necessary support to facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians and sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
The theatre command stressed that troops remain focused on dismantling the remaining ISWAP networks and restoring lasting peace and normalcy across the region.
