Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has criticised Chelsea’s decision to sign veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, saying he does not understand the club’s reasoning behind the move.
Chelsea completed the signing of the 36-year-old England international after he mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Brentford.
Reacting to the transfer, Carragher said Henderson’s move is beneficial for the player but questioned how it fits into Chelsea’s long-term plans.
Speaking on the Football Ramble podcast, the former Liverpool defender said, “It’s a great move for Jordan Henderson, but I don’t understand it from Chelsea’s point of view.”
Carragher dismissed suggestions that Chelsea needed an older player to add experience to the squad, arguing that the club’s real need was for players in their prime.
“I hear people say they need experience, but, for me, they weren’t lacking 35-year-olds; they were lacking players who were 27 and 28,” he said.
Despite his criticism of the transfer, Carragher praised Henderson, describing him as a player he greatly admires.
“I absolutely love Jordan Henderson, and it’s a great move for him, but I don’t see it for Chelsea,” he added.
The former England international further suggested that Chelsea have swung from one transfer strategy to another by previously focusing on signing very young players before now bringing in an ageing midfielder.
“It’s like they have gone from one extreme to another, buying really young and then buying old when you need players in the middle,” Carragher said.
