OKITIPUPA, ONDO STATE — A solemn burial ceremony turned into a tragedy in Ayeka, a town in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, following the sudden and fatal shooting of a traditional High Chief on Tuesday.
Starnews NG reports that the incident occurred while the deceased’s colleagues were performing traditional funeral rites. According to eyewitness accounts and video footage of the ceremony, the proceedings took a disastrous turn when a firearm was discharged during the rituals. The projectile struck the High Chief directly in the head, resulting in instant death.
While the exact identity of the individual who fired the weapon remains unconfirmed, preliminary observations suggest the shooting involved funeral celebrants discharging firearms into the air as part of the traditional festivities. Name of the victim and that of the high chief who was being buried could not be ascertained by Starnews as at the time of writing this story.
The police is yet to speak on this incident.Local sources attribute the fatal incident to an accidental discharge by reckless handlers, though the shocking nature of the event has also sparked intense community speculation regarding the potential testing of traditional charms.
