President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated financial expert Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The nomination, announced on Tuesday, was made in line with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.

Yuguda’s appointment follows the recent redeployment of former Deputy Governor Bala Bello, who has taken up a new role as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.

In a statement accompanying the nomination, the President urged Yuguda and other senior officials to approach their responsibilities with renewed dedication, professionalism and a firm commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.

Yuguda is widely regarded as a seasoned financial regulator with decades of experience in banking, capital markets and international finance.

Before this latest nomination, he served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria from 2020 to 2024, where he oversaw key regulatory reforms aimed at strengthening investor confidence and deepening Nigeria’s capital markets.

An alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Yuguda earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy in 1983. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 1991.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and also holds the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Yuguda began his professional career at the Central Bank in 1984 as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department. His international experience includes serving as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund between 1997 and 2001.

He later returned to the CBN, where he rose through the ranks and eventually served as Director of the Reserve Management Department for six years before retiring from the bank in 2016.

If confirmed by the Senate, Yuguda is expected to bring his extensive experience in monetary policy, financial regulation and reserve management to the apex bank at a time when Nigeria continues to navigate complex economic challenges.
