President Bola Tinubu has formally decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), marking his official assumption of leadership of the Nigeria Police Force following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The decoration ceremony took place on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja.
Disu, who previously served as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, described his elevation as a significant honour tied to his longstanding commitment to policing and national service.
Speaking shortly after the ceremony, the acting IGP expressed appreciation to the president for the confidence reposed in him, noting that Tinubu’s remarks reflected close monitoring of security personnel across the country.
According to him, the president’s comments also served as a challenge to improve policing outcomes, particularly in areas of peacebuilding, professionalism and public safety.
Disu said strengthening cooperation between the police and citizens would form a central pillar of his leadership approach.
“The citizens of the country are the boss,” he said, adding that improved public trust would be essential to effective policing.
The acting police chief pledged to pursue reforms anchored on discipline, respect for human rights and zero tolerance for corruption within the force.
He said officers would be encouraged to uphold professionalism and operate strictly within the rule of law.
“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over,” Disu said.
“We can never succeed without the cooperation of members of the public.”
He acknowledged the country’s prevailing security challenges, including banditry and insurgency, noting that police personnel had continued to demonstrate commitment despite operational pressures.
Disu added that his immediate priority would be boosting officers’ morale while improving coordination to enhance national security outcomes.
The appointment follows a leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force, with the new acting IGP expected to steer reforms aimed at strengthening public confidence and operational effectiveness.
