Kaduna Voices United (KVU) has condemned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his recent comments regarding the imprisonment of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of selective outrage in Nigerian politics.
In a statement issued by its Secretary, Yusuf Dama’i, the group emphasized that while it is important to be concerned about the health and rights of citizens, such concerns should be applied uniformly when holding individuals accountable. KVU pointed out that there was little urgency demonstrated by the public when El-Rufai faced widespread accusations of abuse, suppression of dissent, and financial misconduct during his tenure.
Security-Related Allegations
KVU reported that El-Rufai is now facing charges from the Department of State Services (DSS) in the High Court of Abuja. It is alleged that he may have used communication data illegally, failed to disclose vital information, and engaged in acts that could threaten national security.
This case was initiated following an interview on Arise TV, during which El-Rufai reportedly claimed he could listen to the telephone communications of a presidential security advisor. These statements sparked controversy across the country and raised security concerns.
EFCC and ICPC Investigations
In addition to the DSS case, KVU reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating allegations of diversion of public funds estimated at N432 billion. Part of these funds was allegedly spent on mega infrastructure projects, including the Kaduna rail project.
During his time as governor, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) also investigated claims of abuse of office and breaches of procurement regulations.
KVU stressed that these accusations are serious, as they pertain to issues of national security, state budgets, and public confidence in the government. They cautioned that seeking to exonerate a politician before investigations and trial procedures are completed would undermine democratic values and the rule of law.
Call for Due Process
In conclusion, the group urged the Federal Government to ensure that any actions taken in this case adhere to due process and the provisions of the Constitution. They also called on political leaders to set aside partisan politics and focus on transparency, justice, and accountability in the best interest of Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
