Tension rose in Benue State on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was reportedly blocked shortly after he arrived in the state.
Obi and his entourage were travelling along Boko Road near the Nigerian Air Force Base when suspected thugs allegedly barricaded the route, preventing the convoy from proceeding further. The incident was disclosed by Obi’s media aide and photographer, Esther Umoh, who posted videos of the confrontation on X.
Umoh alleged that the individuals blocking the road were sponsored and claimed that security personnel also prevented Obi from proceeding. Other reports showed men carrying sticks and other objects around the convoy, while videos purportedly showed the vehicles turning back.
Obi later condemned the incident, describing the obstruction as “totally unacceptable.” He said his visit was intended to sympathise with victims and communities affected by the Yelwata massacre, rather than to conduct a campaign rally.
The incident has renewed attention on the strained relationship between Obi and the administration of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, particularly following previous disagreements over Obi’s planned visits to the state.
With Nigeria heading towards the 2027 general elections, the development has raised fresh concerns about political tolerance, freedom of movement and the safety of opposition politicians.
