Four soldiers sustained injuries following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack and ambush by suspected terrorists along the Damboa–Kumala–Maiduguri road in Borno State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, approximately nine kilometres from the Kumala junction in Konduga Local Government Area.
According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, troops of the 25 Brigade were on a dominance patrol when they encountered a command-detonated IED planted along the route.
The explosion was said to have been followed immediately by an ambush launched by suspected terrorists hiding within the area.
Despite the surprise attack, the troops reportedly engaged the assailants and fought through the ambush. However, four soldiers sustained varying degrees of injuries during the encounter.
Following the attack, reinforcements from the Brigade Headquarters, alongside an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, were deployed to support ongoing operations and secure the strategic route.
The EOD team later discovered another suspected explosive device planted along the road and successfully neutralized it before it could cause further casualties.
Security sources further disclosed that about 89 civilian vehicles were safely escorted to their destinations, while an additional 165 vehicles were turned back to Damboa as a precautionary measure due to security concerns.
Military authorities said clearance operations and surveillance activities were ongoing to ensure the safety of commuters and restore confidence along the highway.
The Damboa–Maiduguri road remains one of the critical routes in Borno State and has witnessed repeated attacks by insurgent groups in recent years.The latest incident highlights the persistent security challenges facing troops and civilians in parts of Nigeria’s North-East region.
