Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, has urged Nigerians to stop associating bandits and criminal elements with Islam, warning that such generalisations worsen religious tensions in the country.
The Sultan made the appeal on May 7, 2026, during a meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, where religious leaders and government officials gathered to discuss insecurity and interfaith relations.
He stressed that criminal acts committed by individuals should not be attributed to an entire religion, noting that both Christians and Muslims have suffered from violence across different regions of the country.
According to him, no religion condones killing or terrorism, adding that those responsible for such acts are criminals who should be treated as such under the law.
The meeting also focused on strengthening religious harmony and improving cooperation between faith-based groups in addressing insecurity nationwide.
