President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed the country’s top police officer, Fannie Masemola, on suspension following criminal charges linked to an alleged незаконный procurement deal worth $21 million.
Masemola, who serves as National Police Commissioner in South Africa, is accused of breaching public finance regulations in the awarding of a 360-million-rand contract for police health services to a private firm, Medicare24. The contract has since been revoked.
Prosecutors allege the company colluded with police officials to secure the deal and received over 50 million rand before it was terminated. The firm’s owner is also reportedly under scrutiny for alleged links to organised crime.
Masemola appeared briefly in court earlier this week, facing four counts under the Public Finance Act. The case has been adjourned until May 13. He has denied all allegations.
Announcing the decision, Ramaphosa said the suspension was necessary given the gravity of the charges and the sensitive role of the police chief.
“In consideration of the seriousness of these charges and the critical role that the national commissioner plays, I have agreed that he be placed on precautionary suspension pending the outcome of the case,” the president said.
The development marks a significant shake-up within the country’s police leadership, with multiple senior officials either suspended or placed on leave in recent months.
Ramaphosa has appointed the police’s chief financial officer, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, as acting commissioner, citing her track record of professionalism.
The latest scandal adds to mounting concerns over corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system, an issue that is expected to feature prominently as the country heads toward local elections later this year.
