Authorities in South Africa have arrested a man accused of posing as an astronaut and defrauding unsuspecting victims by selling what he claimed were “rocks from the Moon.”
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly convinced several individuals that he had access to rare lunar materials, promising them valuable “Moon rocks” in exchange for large sums of money.
Victims were reportedly told the items were sourced from secret space missions and could fetch high returns from collectors.
Police said complaints began to surface after buyers discovered the stones were ordinary rocks with no scientific or monetary value. The scheme is believed to have targeted people interested in rare artifacts and space memorabilia.
Law enforcement officials confirmed the suspect is now in custody and will face charges related to fraud and obtaining money under false pretences.
Authorities are also working to identify additional victims who may have fallen for the scam.
The incident has sparked reactions online, with many expressing disbelief at the unusual nature of the fraud, while others warned the public to remain cautious of too-good-to-be-true investment offers.
