Some People Were Happy — Olaiya Igwe Breaks Silence on Death and Illness Rumours

By George Omagbemi

Veteran Yoruba actor Ebun Oloyede, popularly known as Olaiya Igwe, has broken his silence over viral reports suggesting that he was seriously ill and close to death.

The actor addressed the rumours on Sunday, September 13, 2026, in a statement posted on his Instagram page, following the circulation of a video showing him looking weak and being assisted by others.

The video began circulating on social media on Thursday, September 10, prompting concerns among fans, colleagues and members of the public about the actor’s health.

However, Olaiya Igwe explained that the footage was recorded during the production of a movie directed by fellow actor and filmmaker, Mr Latin. He said he was acting the role of a sick father who had returned from hospital and was being assisted by his children.

The veteran actor expressed appreciation to those who contacted him to confirm his wellbeing but also criticised some people who appeared pleased by the false reports.

“Some people were happy that finally their wish had come to pass on me,” Olaiya said, while assuring his fans that he was fine and had no health problem connected to the viral video.

The incident has again highlighted how easily scenes from movies can be mistaken for real-life events when circulated on social media without proper context.
